Ti-6Al-4V is a widely used titanium alloy for Wire Additive Manufacturing, and it is known for its excellent combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and even biocompatibility.
Ti-6Al-4V consists of approximately 90% titanium (Ti), 6% aluminium (Al), and 4% vanadium (V). This alloy composition provides a balance of mechanical properties and enables various applications across industries.
There are two specific grades of titanium wire feedstock able to be used in WAM®, Grade 5 and Grade 23. Grade 23 is similar to Grade 5; however, it has lower oxygen, nitrogen and iron content, providing better ductility and improved fracture toughness.
One of the key advantages of Ti-6Al-4V wire feedstock is its high strength-to-weight ratio. It exhibits excellent tensile strength, allowing production of lightweight components that can withstand demanding conditions. Ti-6Al-4V is highly suitable for Aerospace, Space, and Defence applications where weight reduction and structural integrity are critical.
AML3D’s ARCEMY® and AMLSoft™ have specific processing parameters for Ti-6Al-4V in WAM® applications. Appropriate process parameters, such as welding current, travel speed, and shielding gas, are carefully controlled to ensure successful manufacturing outcomes.
Manufacturing titanium products with ARCEMY® and WAM® enables the production of high-value complex components with precise deposition, offering design flexibility and, most importantly, material efficiency.
