Steel Steel ER80S

Commonly used in WAM® applications, ER80S is a low-alloy, medium strength steel with several advantages in terms of mechanical properties and weldability.

ER80S wire feedstock is typically composed of a specific blend of elements that contribute to its desired properties; it contains elements such as carbon (C), manganese (Mn), silicon (Si), and small amounts of other alloying elements like chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), and vanadium (V). There are two specific types of ER80S used for WAM® applications; they differ in their chemical compositions and intended applications. Generally, the composition and metallurgical properties of ER80S wire feedstock contribute to the resulting Wire Additively Manufactured part’s ability to withstand heavy loads, impact, and fatigue. Specifically, ER80S-B2 offers improved corrosion resistance and high-temperature strength for static and dynamic applications, while ER80S-D2 provides enhanced strength, toughness, and creep resistance, and can be used for some high temperature applications.

Material properties of the ER80S range can be enhanced with the adjustment of parameters managed by ARCEMY®’s, AMLSoft™. AMLSoft™ allows for precise control over wire feedstock deposition, travel speed and cooling rates, enabling the production of medium- to large-scale parts and customised components. In some cases, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) may be applied and could depend on required manufacturing standards, part geometry and industry application.

In WAM® part manufacture, ER80 is suited for bi-similar metal additive manufacturing requirements as well as large format additive manufacturing, where parts are more than 750 kg or are over 400 x 400 mm in size and manufactured in a high volume.
